Nursery Industry Support Program for Afghanistan

Ab. Rashed is from Kahmard district, Bamyan province. Currently he is living in Kahmard district, Benaq village about 15 km away from the district center. He is a farmer, he said “Before I was busy with cultivation of wheat and vegetables. This uniform farming could not help me to respond to my family expenditures, because yearly I have got about 7,000 Afs from one jerib land.

This amount was not sufficient for my family outlays. There was no other sources in the district to use and receive income, therefore; the situation leaves me in a very precarious condition. In order to respond to my family need I have to use to borrow money from other people, pull children out of school to find work, sell livestock or leave farming to find other job”.

Ab Rasheed currently has membership of Bamyan NGA. He started his activity as member in 2010. Currently he has 0.5 jerib nursery, he said “After NGA establishment in the district, I contact with NGA chairman and requested to be as member of NGA, eventually they accepted and I started activity as member. During last 3 years I have got several technical training and inputs for doing nursery business which could help me to improve my production quality. Additionally, it help me to access for a diversified source of income in my farm. During this year 2013 I sold 2,000 saplings and received 140,000 Afs (2,800 $). Furthermore, as member of NGA I have learned more about marketing issue, this is not just help me in nursery business but also able to sell my other agriculture products (wheat, potato, vegetable, and fruit) in a better price. I also introduced with different stakeholders (NGOs, DAIL, and Association) and this support me to increase my relationship among the society”.

As member of NGA he will continue for nursery business in the future wither the external support is exist or not, he added “now I am a skill man in nursery business I will continue my business in the future and I have plan to make it extend, in the future I have plan to produce other varieties of fruit saplings and export to other provinces”.

In his last speech he said “I am very happy to participate in this program and will encourage my other relative farmers to do so. I am very thank full from the sponsor of this program as well as the implementer. I suggest to continue such program in the future for further development of our country”.
